The problem

Google's Keyword Planner has the real search volumes, but it wants you clicking through an ad account one query at a time. I wanted the real numbers from a terminal, in a file I could hand straight to the next step.

What it does

Two commands. One gives keyword ideas from a few seed words, a page or a whole site; the other gives the volume for exact keywords. A query that returns results prints a table and saves a CSV with monthly volume, competition, the top-of-page bid range and a 12-month trend. India and English are the defaults, with flags for other countries and Hindi.

It is what showed me that, for Reportcards, the free quizzes carry the search volume rather than the local tuition pages: 'math quiz' is searched about 40,500 times a month in India against about 1,300 for 'coaching institute jaipur'. It also retargeted Arun Silver's buyer guides at the terms buyers actually type.

Why it is built this way

It talks to the Google Ads API directly, as a read-only user on an ad account that runs no campaigns, so it spends nothing. Even with no ad spend, volumes come back as specific numbers, not ranges.

What was hard

Getting access at all. The API level Google hands out first blocks the keyword planning service entirely, so it needed Basic access on a verified Cloud project. The ad account also has to stay enabled with no campaigns running; if Google cancels it, every call fails until it is reactivated.
